Day 14 - Look at all the pretty fountains...

So I'm actually beginning to wonder to myself how early I can attempt to potty train Ellie.  Legitimately I might add.  There is this mindset referred to as elimination communication or natural infant hygiene.  I prefer to call it by its proper term; holding a baby over a toilet.  Ellie even hits that time range of between zero and four months to which the process is meant to accommodate.  The concept is that I would watch Ellie with an eagle's eye for signs that she's preparing to void her bladder.  When I notice, we would sprint to the nearest bathroom and I would hold her over the toilet.  Sounds easy enough right?

I'm guessing if this was a common thing, then I would actually hear of more people doing it.  I've really only seen it once.  On Facebook.  On a status liked by a friend.  It would be super nice as I am getting a little tired of getting urinated on by my daughter as I change her diaper.  I probably go through three changing pad covers a week because of Ellie wanting to pretend she's a fountain.  I mean I like to pretend that I'm a fountain too but I like to use my mouth and a glass of water instead.  The problem is that I'm clueless at seeing the signs coming.  She literally catches me off guard every time.  I guess that's probably why people decided to invent the diaper once upon a time.  Too lazy/too oblivious/too busy to hold their infant over a toilet while they void their bladder.

On another and much happier note, Ellie and I got to make a fun trip outside of the house today which included Ellie's first ever trip to the library!  Hopefully that's somewhere that she will like to go a lot as she gets older.  Assuming that she learns to read as early in life as her parents, we'll probably be making a lot of trips there quicker than we think.  Of course, Ellie's much too young to really tell me what to get her so I just have to do it myself.  It'd be so much easier if she helped of course.  She was too preoccupied staring up at the halogen lights and admiring the rows and rows of colorful books to really give me input.  So we just settled for some Dr. Seuss books.  Perhaps my daughter's first sentences will consist of nothing but rhymes if we read her enough of them.  And then she'll be well on her way to becoming the best five year old rapper of all time.  'America's Got Talent', here we come!

After the library, we headed to Lowe's to return Ellie's curtains since they didn't work.  I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't approaching that trip with some degree of trepidation after what happened the previous time.  I even purposely went to a different Lowe's to avoid being recognized as that guy who can't calm his baby.  No one wants that label.  Luckily, she loved it this time.  She even went to sleep in the cart while being pushed around the store.  Good baby; I'm very glad that home improvement stores bring you peace and joy.  #DaddyWrite

Day 13 - How do you get out of baby jail?

Another day down of hanging out with Ellie and I'm beginning to see her advance in a lot of ways.  She can do a lot of things that she couldn't even do two weeks ago.  She's learning how to hold her head upright which is great.  It certainly makes it easier to multitask when holding her like that.  You know, read a book or eat a banana.  Something like that.  She's also learning distinct cries to show what she's wanting.  There's a particular one when she's hungry, when she needs a change, or when she's tired.  No particular cry yet for when she doesn't like her outfit, when she wants to go to the zoo, or for when she's ready for a bath.  I figure those will show up at some point.  Especially the one about the zoo.

She even has already gotten a modified army crawl down.   It's harder and harder to keep her on her playmat during tummy time now.  She certainly gets ticked off when she continually gets pulled back from the carpet.  I don't know why Ellie views the carpet as some sort of undiscovered paradise.  It's really just an undiscovered source of facial rug burn waiting to happen.  I just don't have the heart to let her discover that for herself.

The one thing that Ellie really has not learned to do at all yet is to fall asleep on her own and I could not be more excited for that to occur.  Not that I don't enjoy rocking her to sleep.  It just gets redundant when it happens three times in the span of thirty minutes.  There's really just a couple of things to blame.  Ellie's legs and arms still seem to be a little beyond her control at this point.  When's she awake, she generally gets along fine and can even exert some ability when it comes to grasping at things.  When she's asleep though, it's like she's dancing to 'Conga'.  A nice swaddle seems to take care of that just fine though.

The bigger problem pertains to her irrational fear of her crib.  When she wakes up in her crib, I think she believes she's been abandoned in some kind of baby jail.  The bars raising up from all around her.  Too tall to climb.  Too skinny to squeeze through.  No friend from the outside to send her a cake with a nail file baked in.  She can't even dig out and head to Mexico like good old Andy Dufresne.  It's no wonder that she cries when she sees her predicament.

I decided today to embark on what may be a fool's errand.  I WILL GET ELLIE TO NAP IN HER CRIB OR DIE TRYING!!!  That's not an overstatement or anything right?  I figure that if I at least try once a day to get her to nap in her crib, then she'll eventually get used to it and figure out that it's not so horrible.  Either that or I'll buy her a harmonica so that she can play solemn tunes about prison life.  Or a Theremin.  #DaddyWrite

Day 12 - Introduction to Basic Baby Physiology 101

So my baby may not necessarily be a baby at all.  But something else instead.  Perhaps some kind of mutant kitten-volcano hybrid.  Based upon my experiences with her today, I can see all of those in her.  Just saying, I don't think those come from my side of the family.  For example, Ellie really hates it when her mother heads to work.  That is not hyperbole in the least.  Nothing leads to more pure unhappiness in her life than that second that the garage door closes.  I'm beginning to realize that this may just be a part of life for a while that both Ellie and I need to become accustomed to.  However, until she calms, her anger runs as hot as Mount Saint Helens.  As her anger builds, her face slowly turns from her pasty white complexion to more of a Donald Trump orange to finally reaching fire engine red.  Her volume definitely climbs in the same fashion as well.  Since she gets so wound up as an infant, I find myself trying to picture what she's going to be like as a teenager.  I can really only think of one thing.

Of course, she's got some volcano in her for more than one reason.  As I fed her today, during a calm portion of the day I might add, I felt like she was drinking her milk all in normally with no problems.  As I prepared to burp her once she made it halfway through her bottle, I laid her down on her back on my lap in order to set her bottle down.  Before I could do anything else, I see Ellie's mouth suddenly close and her cheeks fill to capacity.  At this moment, I see that time slows down into a horrible slow motion reality where I cannot act fast enough to do anything.  I just have to sit back and enjoy the show.  Ellie then opens her mouth and out erupts a stream of milk not unlike Old Faithful.  I just have to clean us both off and continue on.  At least until it happens again.  Then I'll clean us both off.  Unfortunately, it'll happen again.  Now we're done.

Now as for that kitten part.  Everyone knows that kittens are inherently cute.  Say it with me...Awww!  The soft and fluffy fur.  The big eyes.  The cute sounds.  I tend to think that my daughter is the same way.  She's got soft and silky hair.  Big blue eyes.  Tons of cute sounds.  Ellie's lacking a tail but other than that they're pretty similar.  They both even have a love for milk.  There is another thing that kittens and Ellie have in common.  Sharp nails!  If you've ever spent any time around a kitten, then it's likely that you've gotten a ton of holes punches in your shirt by those tiny claws.  While Ellie can't go that far, she can certainly leave scratches and marks up and down any easily accessible bare skin.  Not to mention her new love of pulling out arm hair of which I have plenty.  Luckily, baby scratch fever isn't a thing or else I'd be heading to the doctor.  Now, please excuse me while I go dig out all of my long sleeved shirts.  Winter may just hit the Holt household early this season...

Day 11 - Lights, Curtains, Action

So I may have missed posting Day 10.  I didn't just 'Jedi mind trick' you and tell you that it never happened.  It did happen.  It was just spent with the processing of getting a new hot water heater put in (Thanks Malachi).  Therefore, no time was found for blogging.  That's ok, though.  No harm done.  So, onto Day 11!  One of the constants thus far over the past few weeks is that I really haven't gotten out of the house with Ellie or if I did, it was only for a grand total of a couple of hours.  It's important to me though that I'm still able to get out of the house and enjoy time away from home while she's tiny and can be toted around with ease.  If my time outside of the house fits within the constraints of Ellie's busy schedule, then I should be able to make it work.

One of the most difficult times of any Monday, or whatever Bethany's first day back at work is, is getting Ellie to accept the fact that her mommy is gone and she's going to have to deal with her daddy for the day.  I wish that I could just key her in on this fact early and have her accept it.  Unfortunately, things really don't work that way.  As Bethany prepared to leave this morning, she gave Ellie a goodbye kiss on the forehead before walking out the door to the garage and to her car.  The moment that her garage door slammed shut, Ellie's sixth sense seemingly kicked in and alerted her to the fact that Mommy was gone.  She made certain to make her displeasure known with her equivalent of the Vader "No" scene from 'Revenge of the Sith'.

After getting Ellie calmed down and asleep for her morning nap, my master plans could come to fruition.  One of my friends had invited a couple of us over to his house for breakfast at 8:00 so I was definitely going to take the opportunity to get some guy time in, even if it came complete with a baby girl in a car seat with her pink and white blanket.  Manly, eh?  I made it over to Tyler's with Ellie fast asleep in her car seat.  As I sat Ellie down on the floor, Tyler's dog Oakley lumbered over to say hello.  I hoped that Ellie would not freak out if she opened her eyes to the one-eyed visage of Oakley staring back at her.  Fortunately, Ellie briefly slit her eyes open, looked at Oakley, and then passed back out.  I'm not sure though if that reaction means she's a dog person or a cat person (or both) but I'll take it.

We stayed at Tyler's until about 10:30 and then left to head to Lowe's.  A baby girl's first trip to Lowe's should be cause for celebration even if it's only to buy some very girly curtains for her bedroom and a bottle of Gorilla Glue.  After a short walk around the store, we headed to checkout.  At this moment, Ellie lost her patience and began screaming at the checkout lady.  The poor lady was unable to find the barcode for Ellie's new curtains in the store's inventory and call other people within the store before she could check us out.  Ellie had really gotten excited about these curtains and didn't want anything to delay her from owning them.  Or it was the fact that she had gotten hungry.  One of the two, not sure.   After a short delay consisting of me attempting to entice my daughter with a pacifier while enduring the stares of fellow shoppers and employees, I proudly headed out of Lowe's with my purchase in one hand and my screaming baby in the other.  Even if I had waited a little too long to head home, the fact remains that Ellie and I were able to get out of the house for over four hours.  I'm willing to consider that a win!

Hey, hey, hey, hey.  Ooh woh

Day 9 - Happy National Chicken Boy Day!!!

Welcome to September.  Everyone knows that one of the best ways to commemorate a new month is to look up the list of special days associated with the first of that given month (Stick with me here).  So, keeping that in mind, let's celebrate September 1st!  The special days are as follows...
  • National Chicken Boy Day - Literally celebrating the ceremonial birthday of a 22 foot fiberglass statue of a boy with the head of a chicken holding a bucket of fried chicken (I wonder if this is some weird form of idol worshipping?)
  • National No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day - This holiday is in place to celebrate words in the English language that don't rhyme with anything.  Like 'orange'.
  • Emma Nutt Day - Celebrating the world's first female telephone operator.  And apparently all women who would go on to break gender norms.

So to reiterate, we're celebrating some really important days today and you'd think that Ellie would have been super excited for her first National Chicken Boy Day.  I know that I am.  We could have gone to KFC together, had mashed potatoes, corn, sweet tea, the whole nine yards.  Unfortunately, Ellie's been asleep basically the entire day due to recovery from her shots yesterday.  Poor thing.  So I've actually had very minimal baby time today.

Now obviously everything that's written prior to the last two sentences is very tongue-in-cheek (The holidays ARE real; look them up), the fact remains that my baby has slept essentially the entire day away which doesn't help in the making of a great blog post.  However, that doesn't mean that we haven't had fun with the limited time together we've had outside of sleeping.  One of my biggest goals with Ellie is to get her feeling comfortable with music.  I feel like if I can link up the sound of music with safe settings, she'll learn to feel comfortable around it.  So today's lesson in Pavlovian therapy was syncing up her bouncy seat with 'Danger Zone' by Kenny Loggins.  Each time the music played, the seat would bounce.  When the music ceased, the bouncing would stop and she would generally start fussing.  I regret not taking video of this to prove that this is working, but definitely will in the future.  And if nothing else, it certainly ups Ellie's coolness factor to be rocking out in her bouncy seat to the theme song from 'Top Gun'.

No, not that one. That's 'Playing with the Boys'.

That one's better.

The weirdest thing about Ellie sleeping all day is finding that she can sleep through some loud things.  I spent time both cleaning the shower and vacuuming since we have company this weekend (Ellie gets to see her uncle Ryan!).  It seriously amazes me that I could vacuum less than four feet away from where she was sleeping without waking her up.  Not only did she not wake, she didn't even stir.  I literally checked for a pulse to make sure all was well.  Don't worry, she was alive and wanted her bottle shortly thereafter.  **Sigh of relief**

So, in conclusion.  This has been a rather random and nonsensical posting today.  It's literally a post about nothing!  That's what will happen when your baby decides to sleep away her entire day.  And on National Chicken Boy Day of all days.  #DaddyWrite
